Question 1

What service area do you cover?

Accepted Answer

We're based in Elginburg, Ontario and serve Kingston and Eastern Ontario. The six locations featured on our site — Kingston, Napanee, Gananoque, Sydenham, Inverary, and Perth Road — are the most common. We serve a wider area than these six; submit the form with your address and we'll confirm coverage.

Question 2

Do you offer free quotes?

Accepted Answer

For our turnkey generator installations (Path 1), we offer a free on-site assessment and written proposal. For our Design + Supply (Path 2) and Design-Only (Path 3) generator services, there's a consultation fee disclosed privately when we reply to your form submission. Electrical contracting work is typically quoted free for standard service calls — submit the form and we'll confirm scope for your project.

Question 3

What's the difference between the three generator service paths?

Accepted Answer

Path 1 — Turnkey Installation: We handle everything — design, supply, install, connect, commission, warranty. One accountable provider start to finish.

Path 2 — Design + Supply: We design the system and supply the equipment package. The customer arranges their own licensed trades for the install.

Path 3 — Design Only: We provide a written design specification only, no equipment supplied. Two sub-options: Path 3A is a pre-purchase phone consult; Path 3B is a full on-site design for customers who've already bought a unit.

Question 4

Why don't you publish prices on the website?

Accepted Answer

Every generator install is sized to the home, the loads, the fuel source, and the property. Publishing a price means either padding it for the worst case (and overcharging easy jobs) or underpricing and eating the overrun on hard ones. Both are bad outcomes for the customer. We do a real assessment, give a real written quote, and the customer sees exactly what they're paying for.

Question 5

Do you provide support for installs you didn't perform?

Accepted Answer

For Paths 2 and 3, where we supply equipment or provide a design but don't perform the install: no phone support, no troubleshooting, no install oversight after delivery. Equipment troubleshooting goes to the manufacturer's support line. Ongoing support from us is a paid service call.

For Path 1 (turnkey) installs, the standard workmanship warranty and ongoing service relationship are part of what you're paying for.

Question 6

What happens if my generator needs warranty work?

Accepted Answer

As an authorized Generac dealer we handle warranty repairs directly, rather than sending you to a call centre. We service the generators we install. Warranty coverage depends on the manufacturer's terms and whether the original install was performed by an authorized dealer. All warranty repairs require the manufacturer's written pre-authorization before we dispatch. See our Warranty Support section on the Generators page for direct manufacturer contact info.

Question 7

How long does a typical generator install take?

Accepted Answer

Depends on the project — service entrance work, gas line distance, transfer switch placement, permit processing, and supplier lead times all factor in. We provide a real schedule in the written proposal after the assessment.

Question 8

Do you offer financing?

Accepted Answer

Yes — generator installs qualify for financing through Financeit. You can check your rate in minutes online with no impact to your credit score and no obligation.

Question 9

What's the warranty on your work?

Accepted Answer

Manufacturer warranty on the equipment (registered by us on turnkey installs, registered by the customer on Path 2 and 3B installs). Our standard workmanship warranty applies to work we perform. Specifics depend on the project scope and are covered in the written proposal.

Question 10

Do you do EV chargers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. EV charger installation is part of our residential electrical services. Same intake form.

Question 11

Will a 22kW Generac run my whole house?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes. Depends on your electrical service size, your major appliances, and how many large loads might run simultaneously during an outage. A 22kW air-cooled unit won't run a full Christmas dinner plus the dryer plus the hot tub plus the AC at the same time. That's why we do a real load assessment instead of recommending a unit off a brochure. Path 3A is built for exactly this question if you haven't bought a unit yet.

Question 12

Can I just buy a generator from you without installation?

Accepted Answer

That's Path 2. We design the system, supply the equipment package, and you arrange your own licensed electrician and gas fitter for the install. Includes the design consultation and the written install specification.

Question 13

I bought a generator at Costco. Can you install it?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we install generators purchased elsewhere, including from Costco. It's covered under our installation plans. The main difference is that we're not the equipment supplier, so the manufacturer warranty registration and any supply-side support is between you and the retailer. Everything on the installation side — design, permitting, connection, and commissioning — is fully handled by us. Reach out and we'll walk you through the right path for your situation.

Question 14

What's the customer portal?

Accepted Answer

hub.knappselectric.ca — existing customers log in to see their quotes, invoices, service history, scheduled maintenance, and direct messaging with us. It's our CRM. New customers don't need an account; start with the intake form.

Question 15

Do existing customers get priority service?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Existing customers reach us through the customer portal, which routes their messages to a separate queue with faster response than new-customer intake. We track service history, scheduled maintenance, and direct messaging in one place. New customers start with the intake form; once you're a customer, the portal is your direct line to us — and it's part of what you get for choosing Knapp's.

Question 16

I saw a Generac commercial — should I call the 1-800 number or call you directly?

Accepted Answer

Call us directly at 613-929-9679 or start the intake at hub.knappselectric.ca/intake. Generac's 1-800 line routes leads through their internal distribution system, which means a customer in our service area might end up with a different dealer. Calling Knapp's directly is the surest way to reach the local electrical contractor whose name you actually saw in a recommendation or a referral. Same applies to the Generac website's 'find a dealer' form — coming to us directly is faster and avoids the routing.

Question 17

Do I have to be a Generac customer to use you?

Accepted Answer

No. We're a full electrical contractor first — residential, commercial, industrial. The Generac dealership is part of what we do, not all of it. If you need electrical work that has nothing to do with generators, hub.knappselectric.ca/intake is the same starting point.

Question 18

Can I get a referral / talk to a past customer?

Accepted Answer

Yes — submit the form and we can arrange this during the consultation phase.
